Intro to Open water swimming at Shepperton this Saturday am

Shepperton open water swim - www.sheppertonopenwaterswim.co.uk - has just opened! It's a lake where they have an organised open water swim sessions with a really friendly relaxed atmosphere, and cake and coffee (clearly not as good as lido cake and coffee!) afterwards.

There's normally at least a few people heading down there most weekends (when they're open til 11am, they also have some week day sessions as well now). Please do post on the forum if you're going so we can get a group together.

I'm going to be going down this Saturday (sorry for competing with Lido swim but it's Crystal Palace on the Sunday), if people want to meet at the lake at 9.30 then I'll run through some tips for open water swimming before we get in. (NB this is not a coached session, just some tips on dry land before hand). If its your first time there you need to do a quick swim test first.

Wetsuits advised, you can rent them there which also gives you a good chance to try before you buy.

To get there you can either cycle (about 30k each  way, I'll be cycling at a fastish pace down there, let me know if you want to join) or the 8.12 from Waterloo gets you in at 9.03 to Shepperton and then it's a half hour walk down to the lake. There's a changing room there and a rack to leave your bikes (your choice whether you lock them).

Please post below if you're coming so I know to look out for you. I'll be wearing a wetsuit but will hang about by a picnic table with some windrush kit on it so you can find me.

More on the lake:

Our lake is all about swimming first - which makes us a bit different! If you want to swim in open water at a unique location without the hussle and bussle of other activities then come and give us a try.

This is our lake, it's not shared with anyone else. There's no pressure from other users, there are no boats on the lake other than our safety canoes and there's definitely no feeling that you are encroaching on other, more profitable activities.

Our whole philosophy is that we cater for swimmers, we don't mind if you just want to do a leisurely 400m loop or are training for an Ironman or a cross-channel attempt. You want to swim in clean, clear water; you want to have a relaxed atmosphere; you need changing facilities and toilets; you would like a hot drink when you're done. All that, and more, is here for you.

I will come Lucy. Might cycle one way!

I'm in, good opportunity for a novice :o)

Hi Lucy, I'm on for this and would like to cycle down there too if that's cool.

Hi! I would also like to join this session. I will get that 8.12 train.

What time will you be leaving to cycle down Lucy?

If anyone wants to join me I'll meet you on the corner of Clapham Common and Elms Road (just near to the Windmill pub) at 7.30am. I'll be cycling around 25 k/hr (as much as the traffic lights allow!). Let me know here if you want to meet. Or I'll probably come back at a more relaxed pace if you want to get the train out and cycle back.

If you're coming for the first time you'll save time if you fill out this form and bring it with you - http://www.sheppertonopenwaterswim.co.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012...

Hi Lucy, I'm not going to make it to Shepperton tomorrow morning after all.
