Event Description

Let’s start the New Year with a bang!

By now the mince pies and baileys would have taken their toll. The family arguments are starting to wear thin and there’s only so much Netflix you can watch…

The 2nd of January 2017 is a Bank Holiday so let’s take advantage and head out on a club ride to clear those cobwebs!

Now a club ride means an easy paced, stick together ride with the quickest (or lightest) waiting at the top of a hill. If you’re new to cycling or want to test out that Christmas gift come along for a spin! I’ll be posting an updated guide for those new to cycling soon and a little about club etiquette so keep an eye for that.

We’ll set off from the Lido at 9am and head out to Kent. Depending on the numbers and abilities we can have two groups either tackling a 50km or 70km route. The plan would see us finishing at the same time for a post ride coffee. I won’t be adding any off-road sections unless there’s group consensus!!

Let me know you’re coming and post any questions below :)

- Rory, Bike Captain

Please note this is member-led so there will be no coaching and all members are responsible for their own safety and good etiquette.

Morning!

Just wanting to confirm who is actually coming and when before I crawl out of bed. There may be ice out in Kent. If that's put you off, please say or change your status :-)

Thanks for replying, Tony.  My friends are very well behaved on their bikes but everyone is being rather indecisive about plans, so we shall make a spontaneous decision on 2nd!  Have a great new year everyone!

I am very happy to set off at 9.30 and do the Paragon route at a slower pace, stopping, Tony,  at all red lights and only Flipping The Bird in self defence.

Good morning everyone!

It looks like a bumper club ride to start the year.

At the moment the weather forecast is 2 to 3 degrees but bright and sunny. Unfortunately News Years Day is set to rain so there is an increased risk of ice on the lesser ridden country lanes. So I'm going to suggest a slight later start.

If we stick to the well trodden Paragon 60km route with staggered times for the fastest and slowest riders we should finish together at Cadence. If everyone agrees the first group can set off at 09.30 and last group at 10.00. Let me know your preference. I'm open to other suggestions.

Looking forward to seeing all that club kit!

Well Louise I can't/don't want to speak for the new committee but the status quo was that these are not "coached" rides. This means the club does not accept responsibility for anything that happens on the ride in the way we do with training sessions - where the session is led by a qualified coach who has a structured plan, has carried out a risk assessment and has an emergency action plan.

As we are not taking responsibility and as the roads are open for cycling and as we are an inclusive club which aims to promote cycling (and running and swimming) your friends would be welcome.

We would ask that they bring a spare inner tube, pump, something to eat/drink and that they check that they can " do the distance" - if we say we are going 120k we will go 120k and it's not really fair to tag along if all you have done before is cycle to work as it wil be frustrating for all concerned.

But we do not drop people and leave them to find their own way back and if somebody has an accident we will make sure they get proper care and attention.

Finally those of us wearing club kit will not be amused if your friends sail through red lights or ride the wrong way up one way streets. Apart from getting cyclists generally a bad name, it does not reflect well on our club and we have had people contacting us to complain in the past.

However hopefully none of this is a problem to your friends and they would be welcome - and hopefully be tempted to join our club.

Hello - hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  Am I allowed to invite a couple of friends to this too?  Three (ex-rowing, very fit) friends of mine were also keen for a bike ride on 2nd and I thought we could all join up.  Thanks!

You can also get Chinarellos - they're a bit cheaper (about $600)

And just in case you are still not sold on the Pinarello F8 here is the official video where they assembled the bike with some cheap ShimaNO parts for some silly reason

Or maybe you want to go for a personalised paint job like Sir Bradley Wiggins on his new Pinarello F8?

He went for the SRAM eTap groupset though rather than Campag EPS - doubt you would get much change from £10k with this option though
