What is Bikepacking?

Bikepacking is simply camping by bike.

Bikepacking is cycling plus camping

Unbelievably there is more to cycling than just smashing out a high avg speed or punishing yourself by going up Chalk Pit. This is something more leisurely, taking the time to enjoy the scenery, have a pint at lunch and do multi day bike ride without over extending yourself.

I am offering to arrange, guide and lead a couple of expeditions into this adventure. My own experiences tended to be at the end of a 250km day and include hedges and fire escapes...this will be new for me as much as it is for you.

UK // Kent Coast

The initial, lets test the water together . Leave Friday afternoon (or Saturday Morning), return Sunday evening. Average 70 miles per day out to the Kent Coast for some fresh air, fresh fish and plenty of beer. Carrying what you need, depending on how you feel we could even wild camp it.

Date - TBC  - April / May - 2 days

Miles - 140

UK // Dunwich

A little more of a stretch but still a good manageable chuck of cycling over flat terrain. Head out at dawn, the target Dunwich beach in Suffolk is 120 miles away. This route is usually seen by night but we'll experience the Essex and Suffolk countryside in glorious sunshine. Once we've consumed dinner and had a pint we'll find somewhere under the stars to sleep. The dawn sunrise is the best way to get up and then head to London.

Date - Early July  - 2 days

Miles - 240 (ish)

London // Paris // London

Like the above but even longer. It's a pleasant 60 miles to Newhaven where we'll take the overnight ferry to Dieppe (£30 for a return) arriving at 5am. The smell of the bakeries will fill the air as we cycle through French villages on our way to the capital, a surprisingly 100 odd miles away. We'll spend the night in the capital before making our way to the coast (route to be determined and ferry schedules permitting) and boarding a ferry back.

Date - End of August (3 to 4 days)

Miles  - 300+

Could be fun!

Subject to Emily picking the camping spots I'd be up for this too

I found Apidura make baggage that attaches to bikes without being as cumbersome as panniers - also helps to have a very light weight tent to avoid having to sleep in any hedges, drains or B and q car parks

Mind more you read about that transcontinental race the more you realise some people...
Subject to ever being able to ride a bike again I'm in.
I'm interested as hoping to develop better bike endurance over the next 8 weeks. Dates and work dependent/ compatible

YES, I WANT TO COME! Just dates and work might stop me with the odd adventure!!

I'm in depending on dates. And I'll drag the big man along as well!

I'm definitely in. Also for a London-Paris 24hrs ride.

YES, I WANT TO COME!

Hello Rory,

I just joined the club but definitely interested in this. Dates and other commitments permitting as the rest.

I also want to come!!

I'm in, dates depending!

If we're not racing I'm sure commuter bikes with panniers for tents could be an option. I can fit camping and cooking kit in mine, and don't mind carrying some extra if anyone else wants me to take their tent!

Also up for a 24hour ride to Paris.

This sounds like a very good idea, cycle to Paris with Elly carrying all the luggage and she will be able to rig up heating and lighting in the temporary accommodation. Rory can do the navigating but who will be in charge of checking he has packed the right inner tubes?

Simon will remember the place we stayed in last time we cycled to Paris - it was a bit up market from B&Q car park having a sauna and a hot tub in the garden with views across the Norman countryside.

Then, next day, we had to listen to a commentary as we passed various local chateaux that someone had stayed in with assorted lucky boyfriends in her youth.

Nobody was that keen on B&Q car park Rory.

Great to see so many people interested in joining in the fun. The main thing is you can take what you want from this, do part of it (ie train back), all of it or even extra.

Now here's some dates for diaries...

UK//Kent - 20/05 to 21/05

UK//Suffolk - 1/07 to 2/07

London//Paris//London - 22/09 to 25/09

The London Paris can easily accommodate a those that want to go only one way and take the Eurostar back.

I'll post the events soon :-)

ps. arranging things can be painful so remember  I'm doing this for the love of cycling and fun. I will design an interesting route suitable for all bikes (hybrid/road/adventure), identify places to stay/camp at our destination, schedule in several food/beer stops, shepherd on the days we cycle and make sure everyone has fun. It will be down to you to book your own ferry, pay for a hotel/hostel/campsite if you want it and let your family/loved ones know your whereabouts.
