Event Description

Semi-organised, part camp and all adventure. This is not about a high avg speed with little time to appreciate the joy of being with friends and taking in scenery. It doesn't mean it won't be difficult either, multi-day distance cycling can make you feel aches/pains you didn't know existed.

Episode 2 in the series - the next big step in miles and possible wild camp.

Following a similar format to Episode 1 we will leave early Saturday morning and return Sunday evening. Averaging over 100 miles per day out to the Dorset Coast for some fresh air, fresh fish and plenty of beer. Carrying what you need for 2 days cycling and camping.

The route  will explore the various forests, points of interest and beauty spots in Hampshire and Dorset.. Being a Bear Adventure the road surface will be mixed so leave that TT at home.

As with all of this if you want to do part, some or all of the ride it can be accommodated.

I intend for this to be a little more rugged but I'll research some cheap accommodation options including camp sites.

Miles - 200 (min distance)

disclaimer - You'll be expected to have some level of fitness, cycling ability and self-reliance.I'm doing this for the love of cycling and fun. I will design an interesting route suitable for all bikes (hybrid/road/adventure), identify places to stay/camp at our destination, schedule in several food/beer stops, shepherd on the days we cycle and make sure everyone has fun. It will be down to you to pay for a hotel/hostel/campsite if you want it and let your family/loved ones know your whereabouts

ps - there's a wealth of information online which should cover most questions. I suggest a visit to Alpkit or Decathlon for cheap kit if you need anything. You don't need to spend much, a lightly packed backpack could also do the trick - you'll only need one cycling kit. My tip is to pack, unpack, half it and then repack that

I think I'm going to head down tomorrow so I won't join you this time but hopefully you'll do it again...

Hi Rosie - we would be setting off at 6.15 from Tooting Broadway and cycling down to Studland past  Poole :) The avg speed over the whole distance would be a guess but I would expect it to be around 25kph or 15 mph if not a little more depending on the group. We'll be stopping for coffee and cake at several points so will be refuelled. The riding surface will be mixed from smooth tarmac to sections of gravel/canal path and bridal way.

Hey,

Just to check are you leaving Brockwell Park at 6.15 on Saturday and cycling down to Bournemouth?

My parents live in Poole so I might join you for that day. What kind of speed are you doing?

Excellent Ill see you in Bournemouth ;-)

I'm hoping there'd be a number of meals factored into those times!

Comment by Rory Kemper on July 12, 2017 at 17:25

It's actually similar climbing to the  Dunwich route Paul with better rail connections ;-)

From Brockwell Park the Dunwich route was 120 miles with 4097 feet

From a start in Tooting the Dorset route is 126 miles with 4272 feet.

So at it stands I will be passing the following train stations (approx. times if starting at 6.15)

Woking  - 7.45 (102 miles left)

Farnham - 9.00 (87 miles left) (would have to cycle from the train station to meet us but it's only a couple of miles)

ParkGate - 12:30 (40 miles left)

Southampton Central - 1330 (37 miles left)

Brockenhurst - 1500 ish (21 miles left)  (there's a ferry ride across the Solent so the timing is a little off)

Bournemouth  - 1630 (8 miles left)

The end  - 1730

Quick Question before any commitment!! The route you've have got planned can you share on GPX file to view ? carrying extra weight ( I'm included in this matter before any comments come in :-) )  , Tent and everything a flatter option like The Dunwich Route was a little more appealing. Whats the Ascent on the route planned to Dorset ?

Hmmm yes Rory...

There is also this aspect of staying in Studland...

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/studland-beach/features/naturism-a...

....less stuff to pack I suppose?

We can stay here:

www.burnbake.com

Or there is alternative accommodation in Studland itself at varying prices.

It's a 12 km cycle from Wareham for those want to travel down late Saturday. I'll also be willing to pick riders up from Woking, Aldershot, Southampton and various stops from there till Bournmouth (all of these and potential time TBC) The terrain route will be mixed if you're prepared to try something new.
