Hi all,

It's less than 11 weeks till I tackle Ironman Wales.
Even though I have done plenty of Lido and lake swims (even rivers) I've not much sea swimming experience, other than a quick splash after a London-2-Brighton cycle.

I'd like to do at least 2 sea-swimming practices before so I can prepare myself for the waves and swell.

Can anyone recommend good places to do this?
Is there somewhere that is coached or supervised for sea swimming?

Ideally somewhere that is simple to get to from London for someone who doesn't have a car.
(i.e. doesn't require multiple trains, buses and a donkey trek to get to).

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Ben

I'm considering doing a trip to Eastbourne to swim with the sea swimmers again. Either Sat 19 or Sun 20, they are swimming at 10am and 11am respectively; or Sat 26 or Sun 27 when they are swimming both days at 2pm.

Having looked at where they swim again I think the fastest people do about 4k (they swim along the beach to various markers and back).

I probably won't combine with cycling but another run along the cliffs is tempting. Let me know if interested and which day.

Hi Esther, I'm potentially up for the `19th but not definitely yet so don't let me change your plans

Hey Ben,

In a similar position, also doing Ironman Wales with not a tonne of sea swimming experience.  Did you find anywhere?  I have a car in London so will probably try and do a couple of sessions at weekends before the event (happy for people to join)

Oli

Bumping this - any takers for sea swimming in Eastbourne this/next weekend? I'll be going on the train. I may have undersold the swimming chops of the group, just seen some pics of members on the podium at the world masters OW champs last week. I think one of them also swam the channel at the weekend...

Hi Esther,

If you happen to go this Sunday, the 20th I will join you.

Hi Luis, are you still interested? I think Sunday beach swim is at 11am in the water. Best train is the 8.47 from Victoria though I would pick it up at 9.06 from East Croydon. Train costs about £25. There is also another swim option, some of the group are swimming a "swoosh" down the Cuckmere river with the current and into the sea, but they warn you need to be a strong swimmer for this as you will be in the rip when you go from the river into the sea and need to be confident getting out of the strong current (or you will end up in the channel). I think I will play it safe and wait until I have more sea experience before doing this (or until I can persuade someone to come and act as safety kayak for me.)

Let me know if you are interested, because I might opt for a bike ride if you are not.

Hi Esther, really sorry but won't be able to make it tomorrow at all.. :-(
Was really looking forward as i am going to do the 2 mile swim serpentine.
Haven't checked Cuckmere but the way you describe it looks beyond awesome!
