Hi All,The committee is working on some open water training ideas (unfortunately we're dependent on water temperature) but we should be able to say more about these soon.

In the meantime, here are some ideas for (relatively) accessible open water places and swims / aquathlons. If you're doing your first tri in open water it might be an idea to consider these as part of the prep. Murky water + weeds + mass start can be a bit overwhelming (I had a total freakout during a swim last year and ended up doing most of it doggy paddle - not a nice experience).

If anyone's got any additional ideas, please add to the discussion. Also, if anyone's planning on driving out to the swimming lakes and has space for a passenger, please consider posting it - you'll have non car owners eternal gratitude ... and you can always split the petrol.

Places to swim

Datchet - open from the 29th April - currently an irresistible 13.2 degrees  http://www.openwaterswim.co.uk/

Shepperton - will open when the water hits 12 degrees (today it's 8.5) - totally boat free so longer opening times http://www.sheppertonopenwaterswim.co.uk/wp/?page_id=49

Serpentine - open at weekends in May - every day from 1st June - http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/hyde-park/sport-in-hyde-park/ser...

Swims:

Throughout the summer, various locations, £30 odd

14th July: Bournmouth (£20)

I can do the 25th I think, is that the day before the Brighton ride?

I can't do the 25th unfortunately.

Brighton ride is on Monday 27th May.

I can do that...

Dear Helen

I have just recently joined and have really enjoyed attending the Jags swim sessions and the later start time has been really suited me. As a person who has a long commute and works outside of London unfortunately attending the coached sessions at the lido during is very difficult.

I was wondering if there was the possibility of making the Saturday am session a coached session?

Kind Regards

Elizabeth

I can make the 25th

Let me know if you are booking a bus.

I can make the 25th.  I've also got a car and can take three others if that helps.

Thanks for the feedback Elizabeth

We know the Friday sessions are popular not just for the later start but also because Audrey is an exceptionally good coach. And they will be on again after the summer.

However as a club we have limited coaching resources as we all have full time jobs that keep a roof over our head. We have to make sure we balance the coaching across all three disciplines and over the summer we have three coached swim sessions, two coached bike sessions, a coached run session and a coached core strength and flexibility session. If anything we have more swimming as you can see although swimming is the most technique-intensive aspect of triathlon and so we think this is justified.

The Tuesday session at Clapham starts at 7am so for some this will be an option before work. Also we have an arrangement with Leander swim club that our members can attend their Masters sessions on Tuesdays at 8.30pm at Clapham Manor pool. They have really good coaches (i know because they have trained my 9 year old daughter to beat me). There is a range of swimmers in this session though - so don't worry if you are not a strong swimmer.

Finally we are looking to put on some weekend coached open water sessions in the near future so watch this space. And we ll look at demand for coaching Saturday but we will also have to find a regular coach

Hi Elizabeth,

I can't add much to what Tony's already said - unfortunately we do our best to cater to everybody's needs and timetables, but sometimes it's just not possible.

As Tony mentioned, we do have an arrangement with Leander swimming club. In addition to the Tuesday session they also do one on a Sunday morning at Ernest Bevin in Tooting, which might be suitable. You can find more info at Leander Masters.

Helen

I can do the 25th as well

Contacted Thorpe lake asking if they can accommodate a group booking of 10+ swimmers. We need to pick a date in the diary now its warming up.

What is Saturday 25th May like for anyone?

I can't make the 25th but I would be keen on another occasion.

Also can't do the 25th (Edinburgh half marathon next day) but would be keen for future sessions.

Hey Paul,

25th sounds good to me - not sure if there are any spaces left...
