I'm planning on celebrating the summer solstice (a day late) on Tuesday June 21st by cycling the South Downs Way. Does anyone fancy joining me?

My plan is to get the first train to Winchester (arrives 6:37am), cycle 160km off-road to Eastbourne, have fish & chips on the beach, and then get a train back to London.

The last direct train home from Eastbourne is at 10:16pm, which should leave plenty of time for mechanicals, cake stops, selfies etc. But if things do all go horribly wrong, there is always the option of bailing out at Brighton after 100km.

The trail is rideable on a CX bike, but I'll be riding a FS MTB because that's what I have, so I won't be super quick.

Hi Ed, Ive done some of the South Downs Route in the past on a mountain bike and its really amazing. But,  I cant see me having much left in my legs that week, but please bear me in mind for this type of trail ride for the future.

Cheers,

Hello Ed, this kind of ride I'd definitely be interested in another time on a non-weekday (I have to be at work unfortunately)

Enjoy..

I'm officially IN!

Yay!

I'm going to see if I can join you, will let you know.

I've done the S Downs over 2.5 days before.

Ahh I'd love to do this! My mountain bike is at my parents though, so I'd only have my specialized commuter bike - would that work? I will also be recovering from Dambuster, so I may just join for 100k... not sure my legs would last all 160k...

It would be great to have you both along, for all or part of the day!

Lisa - it's certainly possible to use a hybrid-type bike but I'm not sure I'd fancy it without front suspension. I found a quote here:

"I rode on a rigid mountain bike, ie no suspension and my upper arms shoulders ached for about 3 days; the last hour or so was endurance not enjoyment. Whilst there are some tarmac stretches and grassy and firm gravel, there is also a lot of very rough hard pebbly stone, chalk flints !Hybrid bike may not have low enough gears for the climbs.
Wide tyres also help to soak up surface, and better on ruts, loose stones."

But that said, plenty of people do it in cyclocross bikes.
Hi Edward, I'm on for this:)

I haven't done any serious rides since I rode the Way three years ago, my bike is in better condition than me probably. Are you planning any rides in the next few days? Or are you around to have chat about the ride?

Cheers,
Jan

Jan - great to have you along!

I'll PM you for logistical chat.

Ok, great.
