Qualification for European ETU and World ITU Championships 2017

We had record numbers of Windrushers who qualified and also attended European and World Championship races in 2016. Would you like to join in the fun next year? Would you like to race for the GB Age Group team?

What is Age Group? https://www.britishtriathlon.org/gb-teams/age-group/about-age-group... The Great Britain Age-Group competition offers all Home Nation members a unique opportunity to compete at International Level in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike winter and cross triathlon.  If you make the team, you can be proud to represent Great Britain and enjoy the experience of racing at an International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championship or European Triathlon Union (ETU) European Championship. Qualification is age graded so there is opportunity for all ages to compete if you meet the criteria. Anyone who registers with BTF can qualify for the GB team, however there are also qualification processes if you are from another country and wish to race for them too - check out your home nation site for more info.

Qualification Races have been set for 2017, and entries are filling up fast. There are set qualification races if you wish to qualify in Triathlon (Sprint and Standard) and Duathlon (Sprint and Standard). Below is a good link to see all the races for the qualifiers: https://www.britishtriathlon.org/britain/documents/events/champs-an...

For other races/distances such as Middle Distance or Aquathlon there are no set qualifier races but the entry criteria does vary. For further information on other races and how the qualification process works, check out the BTF Age Group site and select the individual race you are interested in for the qualification criteria. Also note, there is a new race this year - the AquaBike which looks pretty cool..could you be the first AquaBike champion!!?? Full list of races where qualification is open: https://www.britishtriathlon.org/gb-teams/age-group/age-group-quali...

Feel free to post below any questions or discuss any of the races you are thinking about/have already entered for. I already know a number of people planning to enter qualifications for the Worlds Sprint/Standard Triathlon so would be great to organise travel and plans together! We will be arranging a seminar/chat in January about how the process works and to ask any questions.

In the mean time I would also like to congratulate those who have already qualified 2017 races:

Tom T for European Sprint Distance Duathlon in Spain - April.

Deborah L, Charles B, Becky G, Nick F for European Standard Distance Triathlon in Austria -June

World Championships: From her amazing result in Mexico Deborah L takes a pre-qualification spot for the Sprint Distance.

Hi Nick

I'm racing for Germany where the system is quite different. I will be putting my hat in the ring for all of the above, but will only know in May / July if I qualify.

Hi Gesine, how does it work for German athletes?

Nick, I have also qualified for the European Duathlon in Spain in April and have discussed briefly with Tom about going.

Those interested in qualifying for Standard distance some of the races are filling up fast. Just 50 places left for Deva: https://chestertri.niftyentries.com/Deva-Triathlon-2017

Reminder! Don't leave it too late if you are planning to enter for the Worlds qualifications this year. Entries still open for all of the below but they will sell out, so do enter if you're thinking about it!

Sprint races:

Eton Sprints, Human Race 21st May 2017
Llandudno Sea Triathlon, Xtra Mile Events 25th June 2017
Redcar Sprint Triathlon, Tri Hard Eventss 30th July 2017

Standard races:

Deva triathlon, Chester Tri Club 4th June 2017
Ripon Triathlon, Freebird Events 1st July 2017
Arundel triathlon, Raw Energy Pursuits 16th July 2017

The age group races aren't about fast times and fancy bikes (though for some it is!). Someone said to me last year for them it is the chance to get to go to places you wouldn't of necessarily of been to or be able to experience old places with a new perspective - which I can totally agree!

You are supported by the British Triathlon team who give you all the information and top tips, you get the chance to wear GB kit all the time (if that's your bag!) but most of all you get to meet and hangout with amazing other triathletes from all parts of the world who love to do what you do and are there to enjoy, soak up the atmosphere and return home with an interesting story to tell.

There are many championship races like Aquabike and Aquathlon which are newer to the scene/ less popular / less competitive - chat to Nick to see what you need to qualify to any of them. Also if your home country isn't the UK you may be able to represent them - talk to Gesine who can tell you how she does it for Germany.

If you fancy it, give it a go...you won't regret it!

Hi Tobi

Go to the DTU website and then to the ETU / ITU registration page. You fill you a sheet with race times over the last 2 years and your age group results. It doesn't matter what races, they don't have to be qualifier races. A bit of admin things and off in the post. The first 20 places for the ETU get filled under a code system, no idea how they work it out.

One thing of note, you will need a German race licence (startpass) and for this you need to be member of a German tri club. I joined the Tri Michels in Hamburg for this reason. Their annual fee is really low and they didn't mind having me as some sort of external club member.

Would be cool to have you along as well!! You don't need the startpass for the registration, you can sort this later.

Good luck!

Hi everyone,

Just re-surfacing this post as I presented the process around qualification for GB age group racing in the seminar yesterday.

You can still enter qualification races for ETU and ITU. Myself along with a few others I know from Windrush are planning to go to all the Standard distance ITU triathlon qualifier races this summer - Deva, Ripon and Arundel in June and July. Come along and join us if you are interested!

For other race distances check out the qualification processes. I know a few were interested in middle distances so info on registering for qualification for a particular races is available on the BTF site. https://www.britishtriathlon.org/gb-teams/age-group/age-group-quali...

Also if you have qualified for any championship races recently Windrush would love to know :-) Keep us updated!

Leeds Triathlon Standard Distance 2017 has also announced it will be one of four qualifiers for 2018 World Championships in Australia. A good opportunity to secure an early spot for the 2018 WC's. Also so far not many people have applied so the odds could be in your favour if you wanted to race for the British team 2018.

I have just entered the Deva triathlon in Chester on June 4, ITU world championship qualifying race for 2018. If you are thinking of doing this enter now because it is filling up fast (only 40 places left). I can give a lift up to Chester and back if any other Windrushers are doing this event.

Hey Charles. Would you have space for 2 (Becky and me) and bikes for a lift? Thanks
