British cycling para hub, Herne Hill – Volunteer tandem pilots and help required

Apologies  for Another cheeky self-interested appeal!!

For some reason London was the only region without a British Cycling disabled hub however this has now been remedied with monthly Sunday sessions   being run at Herne Hill and Lea Valley.  The sessions are a rare opportunity for the non-able bodied to access the track and Velodrome and the benefit of British Cycling coaches, they are run jointly with Wheels for Wellbeing from whom I’m currently renting my tandem.  The following link has more background on the hubs https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/disability/article/20170406-gorid... ..

the next session at Herne Hill is on Sunday 7   May 11:00-13:00 dates for the next few months can be found here: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events?keywords=para&view=off&distance=&postcode=&fromdate=01%2F01%2F2017&todate=30%2F12%2F2017&region_id%5B%5D=4&region_id%5B%5D=16&day_of_week%5B%5D=1&race_duration_min=&race_duration_max=&resultsperpage=30&series_only=0&online_entry_only=0&zuv_bc_event_filter_id%5B%5D=33

Rob Mace is managing the London hub, he is specifically looking for volunteer tandem pilots to partner up with blind/VI cyclists like myself, there are expected to be 8 blind/VI male and female cyclists at the May Herne Hill, session..  The tandems used are   freewheelers variable geared Dollans http://www.dolan-bikes.com/tandem/dolan-tdr-tandem-road-bike.html.

For those interested Rob is running a free, tandem pilot training session at Lea Valley on Sunday 11 June 08:00-10:00.  Rob is also looking for general assistance with the sessions which cater for all disabilities.

Anyone interested and kind enough to give up a couple of hours of your valuable time should contact Rob at robmace@britishcycling.org.uk  .  Would also be appreciative for those affiliated with local cycle clubs forwarding this on.

It's not purely self-interested Haren. Obviously.

Piloting on the front of a tandem is not necessarily easy but is very satisfying AND it is a very good workout that can break your own bike training out of any monotonous rut that you might have fallen into.

As I understand it British Cycling are looking for people who either have experience or want to learn to come to the session on May 7 (next Sunday) which will be run by knowledgeable and experienced tandem coaches (i.e. Not by me)

I think it will be fun and am looking forward to it.

I would love to do this...just need to confirm my plans to see if I can make it!

That would be great Becky as the session is open to women who need pilots as well.

So really hope you can make it

This sounds great, I just need to check on other plans for Sunday first

I am also interested and should be able to make it on Sunday!

Thanks guys much appreciated if you can make it

Hi Haren, I'd be keen to get involved with this. I can't do Sunday I'm
afraid (already doing a sportive in Surrey) but I'm free June 11th so I'll email Rob.
We are dog sitting on Sunday. Is Hernehill velodrome dog friendly?

Hi Haren - I'd like to get involved but Im a fairly nervous cyclist at times and so I don't think I would be very well matched to this. Sorry :-(

I'll hopefully be able to make it down on Sunday. Can't make the 11th though, so will email Rob.

No problem Laura tandem piloting isn't for everyone and as Tony has found you can't just get on and ride off with your stoker!

I've probably focussed a bit too much on the VI and tandems but there will be other disabilities including   hand cyclist and triccyclists.  I believe  Rob is also looking for assistance for these cyclists and more generally fif you want to help but don't fancy the tandem   Laura A said:

That sounds great! My sister rides a trike and loves it :-)
