Proud to be Windrush! Ellie R, Saffron P, Deborah L, Becky G and Nick F at the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Rotterdam
What an incredible end of the championships season. I just wanted to give a brief highlight to the amazing work and dedication these Windrushers put into this year with their goal accomplished of competing at the World Championships in Rotterdam on Sunday. All the hours of training, attending the qualifying races and preparing. Super well done to you all!
The build up there was a lot of excitement as well as some anxiety. The weather was bad and rainly on the days before the race, the bike course seemed very technical (over 30 tight corners to take over 20km - so double that for the Standard distance) so we were all a bit nervous. Luckily we watched the pro's the day before which was great to see, then loaded up with healthy foods and had an early night back at the team hotel.
The morning of the race. The Standard distance started very early, with wake up of 5am before setting off for last minute transition checks. It was a split transition which meant shoe check in in the dark followed by a somber boat ride across the river to check on the bikes left over night. However when it eventually got light they were treated with a sunrise and beautiful weather wahoo!
The swim was a 1 lap course in the harbour off the river. This was followed by a long 0.8km run to transition. The bike course as mentioned was very technical and was suited to those with great bike handling (some described it like racing as a commuter in London with so many obstacles and bridges to cross). However it made it quite exciting and really made the time pass quickly. The run was based around a park with winding paths but really beautiful. You then finished along the famous blue carpet with huge support to the finish line.
The weekend ended with the closing party and medal ceremony, a bit of dancing on the stage and drinks with our old Windrusher friend Emma and her team mates in the Irish bar..need I say any more ;)
Racing in the championships is a great experience full of friendly people within GB team but also meeting people from around the world who share the love for triathlon. The community is great and the support is brilliant!
Results Standard Distance:
- Saffron and Ellie compete in their first World Championships. And for Ellie only her 2nd Standard Distance ever!! Both finishing in the top 50% in their age groups in 40th and 41st place!
- Becky 5th Place - After coming out of the swim behind the front pack, she took to her bike and went for it...After her speedy transition was already into the Top10 then with her great bike handling around the two laps she dropped into 5th place and held right through to the end after a tough run! Super well done!
- Deborah 3rd Place - So dedicated this year after 2 previous podiums this year. Deborah came 3rd in the World! Our first Windrusher to podium at the World Championships. What an achievement!!!
Results Sprint Distance:
- Nick 21st Place - Draft legal sprint race. Really good fun racing tactically and as fast as possible around the course! Only 2 minutes separated all the top25 and being on the podium so I have an aim for next year now!

Becky - I think you came #41 overall for the AG Women!
Sounds great, although there's no differentiation for me which might be the issue - Definitely a few beers coming your way for your achievements and advice though!

@Matt I will be organising a Q&A session in October for age group racing over a few beers (now it's off-season). Covering a few things on the process, how best to plan qualifications and further top tips.
Thanks everyone! It was such a brilliant weekend - looking forward to trying again next year and fingers crossed we get an even bigger Windrush team over to the Gold Coast! #windrushontour
