Dear Windrush Triathlon Club Community,

Today (6/7/22), British Triathlon (BTF) published new guidance with regards to transgender athletes. Their initial Transgender Policy (2018) was highlighted as requiring review by the Sports Councils Equality Group (SCEG) and the International Olympic Committee. All BTF members were sent a survey to complete around April time this year.

Responses from this have confirmed that triathlon is a gender affected sport. For this reason, BTF have taken the decision to reorganise categories. This will apply to athletes over the age of 12 partaking in competitive events only from 01/01/2023.

From this date, there will be two categories; a female category for athletes who are assigned female at birth, and an open category for athletes who identify as male, female, transgender and non-binary. We await further guidance from BTF which is due for publication in Autumn.

Windrush Triathlon Club supports transgender athletes, and will not tolerate any transphobic behaviour. As a club, we recognise our participants as the gender they identify as, irrespective of their birth sex. Everybody is welcome to train with us. It’s important to note that these changes will not affect the way in which our training happens, nor how our club runs. If anybody needs any support following this move by BTF please let me know, and I will do my best to help. Any concerns can also be directed to concern@britishtriathlon.org.

Please see the link below to the full article. From here, you can see the outcome from their members survey as well as their consultation process and FAQs.
