Hi all,

It's less than 11 weeks till I tackle Ironman Wales.
Even though I have done plenty of Lido and lake swims (even rivers) I've not much sea swimming experience, other than a quick splash after a London-2-Brighton cycle.

I'd like to do at least 2 sea-swimming practices before so I can prepare myself for the waves and swell.

Can anyone recommend good places to do this?
Is there somewhere that is coached or supervised for sea swimming?

Ideally somewhere that is simple to get to from London for someone who doesn't have a car.
(i.e. doesn't require multiple trains, buses and a donkey trek to get to).

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Ben

Maybe for the August one we get an event set up and see how many want to join?

In the meantime, Matt and Anna, I'm apprehensive but keen to do this.
I like your Woking thinking, that might be a decent option.
I'd quite like to do the full distance back but I have a leaving-do and a separate birthday to attend on the Friday so the full cycle back might be a bit much.

Regarding the cycle, I'm aiming to do an average pace for the journey back, I'm not the quickest especially hungover, tired from a swim and with a soaking wetsuit in a bag on my back. Haha.

I don't have a Garmin but if someone has done the route back before and put it on Strava then I can create a route on my Strava from it.

PM me and i'll send my phone number to organise more logistics if keen.

Hi Ben,

Caroline and I are driving down on Friday afternoon and staying in a B&B so see you there!

Thanks for the info folks.

I'll probably do both this Saturday and also the August one.

I'm tempted to get the 6:30am train from Waterloo getting into Bournemouth for 8:43.
Then cycling back to London afterwards.

Matt, Lucy, are you thinking the same?

Brighton can be great fun. There is swim around the pier this weekend http://www.swimbrighton.co.uk/events/swim-round-the-pier/
This year is going to be flat on Saturday, so no good if you want choppy water for practice. perhaps Sunday afternoon will be better.

The races I've done with sea swims have always been horrendously choppy, and I've suffered! I'd be up for some more practice to0!! I may be up for the August one depending on family stuff.

I've trained at Dover harbour before with the channel swimmers..think they still do it every saturday and sunday where it is partly supervised by the dedicated channel swimmer team!

Neil, will be good to see you again, twice in a week!

Anna and Matt, i've booked my train from Waterloo, getting the slightly later 7:35am train (need an extra hour in bed) gets into Bournemouth at 9:43 then a 10 min cycle to the start line. Race briefing at 10:15. Still planning to cycle back but may head to Woking instead.

Does any of the other Windies have a route back by any chance?

It's just the seafront at Boscombe where you would lock your bikes, but if you lock them all to each other and the railings I think it is unlikely they'll be nicked. You will have to ride back with all the locks though! Or if you can persuade a non-swimming cyclist to join you then they can keep an eye on them all ....

Thanks for that, probs make me swim a bit quicker knowing I have left my bike somewhere lol! extra training if we are cycling back with 'weights' thighs of steel!

Ben...

Me and Matt are all booked on, same train (same extra hour in bed phewph!) althou pretty sure the choppy sea would have woken us up! I'm going to do the 2.5km swim. So can meet you at Waterloo, might be easier to message my phone is 07773012249

Neil & Caroline B &B sounds like a good shout =o) we will see you at the start line. If your driving back do you reckon you could take our bike locks & shiz back to London?

See you soon, Anna

There is a route back somewhere - will have a look tonight - think people might have posted their swim stuff back actually

Last time I remember dropping Neil as Deborah was in one of her "let's not take prisoners" moods.

The route basically swang up through the New Forest then followed the parallel to the A3 into west London - was a good run and with the swim is a good simulation of an ironman event

(Don't try running a marathon when you are back at home though)

This is my route from last time: https://www.strava.com/routes/2872412 Obvs you don't need to go all the way to my old house!

Hmmm - I seem to remember Neil was stopped checking a tyre when you guys decided to sprint off!!

I'm a little late to this thread but also need some sea swimming practice! I'm signed up to the Swanage Triathlon in Dorset on August 13th, doing the Olympic. (I'd be glad of some company for this - just me at the moment.) My first time at this distance so I'm not quite up to cycling to and from the coast yet but happy to train or train + bike. I've done quite a few beach trips to the south coast and out to Kent in the past so have some ideas of where to go. (I may also be able to arrange a lift for the odd beach trip.) I'll look at the Bournemouth thing, and will post here if I come up with any other plans.

I think there is a sea swimming group in Eastbourne that meets Saturday mornings, I seem to remember seeing their facebook page.

Fun times!
