So I'm thinking of investing in a smart trainer...

I've read numerous reviews online and there's a lot of positive noise around the Wahoo Kickr and the (notably cheaper) Tacx Flux, but I wondered whether any of you have experience of either of these, or others and can offer any recommendations or criticism?

Or if anyone has a smart trainer I can borrow/try out just to see whether it's something I'll actually get on with before taking the plunge, that would be AMAZING...!

Thanks all,

Ellie.

Interested too.

Everyone says they are pretty boring....

I used a Tacx clever trainer on my level 3 coaching course- was made to be the guinea pig while other coaches commented on my technique, clothing, haircut and general lack of attractiveness.

It was a slightly involved Functional threshold power test (285 watts in case you're interested - I thought not)

j Frankly it did take quite a while to set the turbo up and get started. The link to the computer was where the problem was and it was a pain compared to my much more basic turbo trainer at home. It was strange how the resistance changed in sync with the graph of the gradient. I have used the more complicated Tacx machine which was linked to a video of the climbs I was simulating at Cadence- they also took a bit of sorting out and were not the most reliable.

In the end I thought that I know what is involved in putting in enough effort on a turbo - I very rarely use mine as I find it boring and prefer to be outside. If the weather really is too bad for cycling I go running.

But then I am an old technophobe and am sure the Playstatuon generation are more keen on these toys ;-)
Get one - I love my Wahoo Kickr!
I have a spare you're welcome to borrow to try out if you like.

Thanks Tony - you're right, nothing beats the real thing!

Edward - may I??  That would be really useful, I'll PM you. Thanks!

Hey Hey,

Just pulling back an old topic.

After the really muddy ROFL last week I decided to  buy a smart trainer to support my winter miles.

I thinking about this one:

Does anyone have experience?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have got a Qubo Digital Smart B+, easy to use and interface with the usual stuff like heart rate monitor and the iphone. Use mainly for interval sessions, up to 1h30, otherwise I have to agree that it can become boring. These things can be used with Zwift to make it more social and race against other people worldwide.

Don't know the other turbo trainers, but there is nothing like trying them. You are are welcome to borrow mine.

You are welcome to borrow mine.

Zwift was my main idea, I am quite limited in my choice as it needs to be used with true axle

I Have a Tacx Smart Turbo.

+ Points: The software is fantastic. Interval Training, HRT & uploading routes to your iPad or PC to make the training experience even more enjoyable it's fantastic.

- Aftercare. I've broken my turbo after 2 years of use :-(  The back roller motor has completely died on me, so no uploading from the bluetooth to my iPad for any of the above tricks. Repair or replacement has so far been a nightmare.

So ill probably end up getting a new turbo !!

We have this one at home which I believe is one of the best value smart trainers on the market. - Bkool Smart Go

I have nothing to compare it to but works fine and watching actual videos and chasing random spanish people is better than watching the wall. I think most smart trainers will work with multiple software systems, as will this one, but haven't tried anything beyond the Bkool software yet.

As ever DC Rainmaker has written more than you need to know on this topic, and looks like a 2017-18 comparison article is due pretty soon

I got emailed about this event which might be interesting for prospective turbo trainer buyers.
