Dear all

I’m keen to keep up some longer rides over the colder months, this is my draft timetable, but changes may have to happen later on just because. Each month I will test a route, so it’s not rubbish when it comes to doing it for real, and leading a ride on that route, I'm sort of doing this with my Dulwich CC hat on, but I know some of you enjoy a big day out too, so come along.

Rides are planned for Sundays so I can have fun at HHV on Saturdays. All rides will be a nominal 200km, but I’ll not force the distance, and I might cheat and make you do a bit more than 200km by putting the start a bit further away. Routes may feature a bit of dull straight road to get us out of town faster; it opens up areas we seldom visit.

Not sure you can do 200km? Give it a go, you can always jump on the train when you have had enough. Pace will be what works for the group but I'd like to keep the moving average over 25kmph, actual average will depend on faff and lunch of course. I’d expect everybody to turn up with enough food to get through the first 100km, and the group can decide if it’s a day for warming up in a pub or grabbing a sandwich from a petrol station on the day.

I’ll keep this thread up to date for the duration. I’ll post GPX files up before each ride, and it would be marvellous if some of you had the route loaded on the day so I can sit in out of the wind. Most Garmins will not do 200km of navigating on one charge, so you may need to get creative if you want Strava to validate your life choices, I am that shallow.

It would be greatly appreciated if you fitted proper full length mudguards if rain is likely as 200km can feel a long way if you are getting icy water in the face the whole time, and sitting on the back is only half way polite! Lights take the stress out, stuff happens, it will go dark, please fit them. Please don’t fit continental supersonics and expect everybody to stand about in the cold whilst you fix multiple punctures. I hate crashing so will cancel if ice is likely.

That all sounds a bit serious, it’s not, it will be lovely, riding in winter is brilliant, you see different stuff, and after a week in the office and not seeing any natural light from Monday to Friday spending that long out in the sun is magical.

Thanks,

Hector

great initiative! I will happily join you for a few : )

Good afternoon.

Sunday 29 October looks like it's going to be glorious, sun, temperatures in the mid teens and dare I mention this, 0% chance of rain!

I have modified the ride a little, getting it just under 200km, and removing a couple of little mapping errors, here it is COURSE_16568855 1.gpx (474.8 KB)
or here connect.garmin.com/modern/course/16568855 if you have issues making it work it's public on my garmin account, which is in my name and it's called DP200 Kent, or I can email you the course, if you want that special service email me at hectordotkiddsatgmaildotcom you can probably figure that secret code out...

As the clocks change this weekend can we please meet at Cadence at 07:30, yes it's a bit earlier than usual, but you still get an extra 30 mins in bed, and its 30 mins less riding in the dark.

See you on Sunday

Hector

I might join you for about 2/3 of the ride. I'll have a look at the course a little later.
7:30! I had been hoping for a lie in :-)
Cheers
Frank

I might be up to try this but 0730 is a challenge in the winter and `I have a party tonight so do not wait for me. If I miss 0730 I'll join the 0900 cruise.

I have no intention of riding 200km so I have checked the trains. Staplehurst at 80km trains at 19 and 49 mins past hour. Frant at 140km trains at 33mins past. Tunbridge Wells at 140km trains at 09 and 39 mins past. Does not seem to be rail replacement. I note there are opportunities for short cuts too.

Deborah it might be helpful to realise that Hector is training for something which when he hits 200k he is barely over a quarter of what the winner will do?

Mind that guy had to have a bum transplant earlier in his career
Will aim at joining and see how long I can hang in there. I'm out tonight too and bedtime will be out if my control, but fingers crossed!
I"'ve created a shorter 150km route, removing the extra loop after Goudhurst, which I'm aiming to do. Hopefully see you at Cadence

As I'm still at party looks like 0900 ride for me.

Yesterday was fantastic, 3 strong riders from DP, me bridging the club divide and a storming performance from Windrush bike captain Gesine proving that triathletes can hold their own over 200 lumpy km. I cannot promise that the next ride will be held in such perfect weather but I will make sure it's a beautiful route.

Dig out your lights.

See you on the next one.

While Hector can't be responsible for the weather, he was certainly responsible for a most lovingly curated route, with scenery, fresh tarmac, hills and flats in equal measure. Hector is also a gentleman not declaring my last ditch pit stop at the petrol station, when I was finally running out of juice about 6km from home. Oops.

Also, he pulls a lovely chatty crowd from DP. Defo will join again!

Now I really feel I should have joined this ride!

Hello

The next iteration of this series of rides will be on Sunday 12 Nov, 07:30 from Cadence. We will visit the desolate Medway valley and Isle of Sheppey. Not quite as rural as my last ride, but flatter and should be quicker.

Clearly it will go dark before we get home, bring lights. Please also bring enough food to do at least 100km, and we will grab some lunch to make sure the second 100km are fun too.

Here is the route
