Hi all,

Following a flash of inspiration during my morning swim, I've spent the day procrastinating and signing up for open water swimming events for next year.

Other than the Scilly Isles swim (brrr, plus £££) and the Great Wales swim (sold out), does anyone have any other ideas? And/or would you be up for freestyling and sorting out our own swim/sauna-type thing. I think Simon had some thoughts on this.

All ideas welcome!

Hi Nicola

Great news. You'll be swimming 10km in now time then wanting to go further.

There are hundreds of events through out the UK and some of them will off shorter and longer distances.

It depends if you want to go all out and do a marathon first time or build up to it, and how far you're willing to travel.

In May, Capital Tri normally do a 3km swim which is a good start to the season and takes place in Stoke Newington.

The Great North Swim is also ace. That is taking place on the weekend of 10th June. Has distances of 1km, 5km and 10km. Good event and I normally stay in a b&b and make a weekend of it.although the same weekend next year I've signed up to the Jubilee swim near Eton.its a 10km but is broken down by having to get out to avoid locks.

Great swim also do events in London and Suffolk in June as well.

Dock to Dock swim is a 5km or 10km in Victoria dock. Not so pleasing as a countryside swim but still fun.

There a group of swims that take place in Henley on Thames by a company called Henley Swims. They do a 14km which is great and not as bad as it sounds. http://henleyswim.com. I might do the Club to Pub swim this year is quite short but meant to be fun and you get beer at the end.

There are some great swim in Cornwall run by Madhatter events. They do some swim-runs as well.

Most of the listings for swims in the U.K. can be found once they have been announced here - https://outdoorswimmer.com/find/events#

Hope that helps, let me know if you're thinking of signing up to any as we might be able to get a group of us going.

Simon

Hi,

Just to say I'd be up for some outdoor swimming events. I did the Brownsea Island swim last year which was great It's very hard to get a place though

Let me know what you sign up to...

I"m keen for some too! Scilly swim last year was the best thing ever. Though it is expensive and a bit of a faff to get to. Keep me in the loop for any interesting-sounding events. I'd be up for some lake district swims in the summer if anyone fancies.

Amazing, Simon - thanks for that. I'd be up for Lake District, too, Rach. Whenever anyone's signing up let me know and I'll likely join!
I’d be up for some too, especially if it means a weekend in the Lakes! Let me know if you book anything and I’ll do the same.

Just been having a quick google. I found this website: http://www.epicevents.co.uk/open-water-swims/derwent-swim.html.

They're not too expensive either...

and there's this one:

which looks amazing...!

Windermere One Way would be ace. Think it's a balloted swim though so you have to go into a pot as it's quite popular. Get your own kayak though but is costly at I think around £300 but don't quote me on that.

Yep !! For Lake District Swims & Camping !! Ill drive

A bit of a journey but a warm swim when you get there.

Definitely up for the Club to Pub, it's a great event and very beginner friendly. We should go join the Eastbourne Sea Swimmers for some training one weekend too. I want to do this sometime, hopefully they will do it in 2018: swimming round an island off the Italian riviera, distances 800m to 6km http://swimtheisland.com/en/la-gara/i-percorsi/

I'd be keen for some lake swimming!

Maybe it's easier to set up a What's App group so when ticketing opens up, we can send round links and book. Sounds like quite a few spring/summer 2018 swim events are opening now-ish.

Do you want to send me your number if you're up for open water swimming round the UK in warmer climes and I can set up the group? I'm on 07580 333364.
