Hi all,

Following a flash of inspiration during my morning swim, I've spent the day procrastinating and signing up for open water swimming events for next year.

Other than the Scilly Isles swim (brrr, plus £££) and the Great Wales swim (sold out), does anyone have any other ideas? And/or would you be up for freestyling and sorting out our own swim/sauna-type thing. I think Simon had some thoughts on this.

All ideas welcome!

Hector - I'm trying to work out whether it would be best to do the volume of training for the Big Welsh in nice toasty indoor water in the new year OR brave swimming in the Lido earlier

Have never swam further than 5k (although that was an insane jaunt in the Atlantic when I was a lot younger)  so a bit unsure how to build the stamina for nearly double the distance

Maybe we should all meet up for a drink sometime and compare notes about what we are doing?

Tony

I am planning to follow the Dart 10k plan for the Welsh 9k, but making sure my weekly "long" swim from April is in a lake/sea. Will also sign up for the 3k in May in Hackney and looking for a 5k early/mid June.

I think Becky J is also doing the same event.

I've signed up for the 3.8km Derwent swim too :)

Me too. Looking forward to the swim and a weekend in the Lakes.

Tony, I suspect it doesn't matter if you do your early training in a nice warm 25m pool, or in the Lido. The really important thing for me was the long lake swims where I learned to sight little and not often without going off course Once you can swim straight sighting is easy cos the buoy is always where you expect it to be, and it's so much quicker if you can just glance up.

Thanks Hector - my main ambition over the next month is to stop re-breaking my right arm. It’s seriously getting annoying now - obviously working on the kitchen should be firmly Risk Assessed and a rigorous Risk Management Plan implemented
Signed up to the Windermere One Way. This could be th death of me or just my shoulders.

WOW! (literally). Well done Simon! I am going for Dart 10K and possibly the Swoosh too. Can't make the Derwent weekend as I am at a wedding sadly.

Ooh I'd be up for the Bantham Swosh as well. 6km in Devon in June - lovely. Tickets on sale on 5 December ie tomorrow. Thanks for suggesting!x

It's July not June! So weekend after Derwent I think. I am still pondering as have lots of weekends away round then but does sound like a fun event. £70 though. Ouch.

Ah yeah - 14 July. Lake District Derwent is on 30 June so 2 weeks to rest! I'm up for that, I reckon. Easy to say that when it's 7 months away!
