Hello wonderful Windrushers!!!

It is that time of year again when you get the opportunity to tell us what you did in 2017 that made you proud.

I would absolutely love it if you could tell me what you did in 2017 which made you proud. This could be anything. (Windrush / sport related of course) It could be a mad cap icy iron distance race in the Arctic (see Mr Barclay) or it could be your first Parkrun finish. It could be one length of a moderately cold lido on Christmas morning with only a few childish whimpers. The only criteria is that it made you proud.

I'd love you to respond to this post or you can send me a private message if you prefer.

Tell me. I dare you and flesh it out with some detail. Twitter style, not war an peace though :)

Definitely tell me about Iron distance races, 70.3, marathons, ultra trails, channel swims, marathon swims, half marathons, swim runs, the swimmer, trans continental bike races, any distance PBs, age group qualifications, your first triathlon, volunteering roles, coaching qualifications, parkrun successes.  You get the idea...

Why? Our new years party is coming soon and it's going to another awesome evening for the the #windrushfamily. We want to celebrate you because you are the club. We exist to nurture those moments and opportunities which you grasp.

Come on #windrushfamily.

(yes, i mean you and yes I am interested and yes that thing you are thinking about is the thing you should tell me about)

I was really proud of the swimrun with Edward too - I loved being in a team again and felt pretty awesome crossing the finish line. I'd also love to do more. I was really proud of Edward for not stopping in the swims even though he was totally knackered and had me "encouraging him"!

I was so, so proud of Rory and his team for taking the Aquathlon baton and running with it to new heights, and for myself for finishing the run despite really terrible asthma.

I was so lucky to witness moments which made me very proud: Elly completing the 70.3 swim at Sussex like a boss, and Lucy going sub 5 hours at the Cotswold 70.3 (OK, she was far ahead of me, but I saw her after....) Very inspiring women.

I'm really proud of all of the IceWindies who have kept swimming in the cold this winter, and also really got into it. I love our brave, frozen community :-)

Completed my first Ironman, Ironman Wales, despite horrendous weather conditions and an illness that meant I couldn't swallow solid food for the 2 weeks before (or after) the race. The daft thing is I'd do it all again (not the illness though).

I also managed a Sprint PB at Crystal Palace, an Olympic PB at Deva, a sub 5hr Middle Distance at the Cotswold Classic and a Marathon PB at Brighton.

Looking forward to having a rest this year!

Doing the Lofoten Extreme triathlon in the Arctic circle was an amazing experience, but the one I am actually most proud about is going sub eleven hours at the Barcelona ironman six weeks later, coming 9th in my age group. I was jogging along in the rain on the last loop of the run and did a bit of mental arithmetic: yes I COULD go sub eleven if I got a serious hoof on! So I downed a cup of Red Bull and legged it for the last 7km, forgetting that the reason I hadn't touched Red Bull in 12 years was because it makes me violently ill. I held it together to the finishing line and then did a rapid diversion to the railings of the podium, so no finisher's photo but at least the blue carpet was unsullied!

Given what a rubbish job I did at the beginning of the season in buying kit, I didn't represent the club as much as I would have liked.

However, I was very pleased to finish 5th in AG at our Aquathlon, and 9th in AG at Crystal Palace (my first race for the club).

I am delighted to have the opportunity to be Run Captain this year and to see if we can bring people's running on with an array of new (fun!) events planned.

And, finally - and most importantly of all - I am very proud to have come across such a wonderful and inclusive club and great bunch of people.

I have quite a long list - perhaps I'm easily impressed?

My first SwimRun (with the amazing LauraA). Looking forward to doing more!

My first race on my TT bike following a nasty accident a couple of years ago. I was very nervous!

Race to the King - 85km of trail run/walking over a weekend along the South Downs Way (with the wonderful Anna).

I finished my 100th parkrun in 2017! Given my first one was in 2012 and there was a whole 13 months before the second run, 100 was unimaginable to me. Then it became part of my Saturday morning routine (this was also long before I was in Windrush and knew the joys of parkrun, lido, brunch) and it became so much easier to tick off a 5km week after week. It hurt less each time and before you knew it, run number 100 was finished!  It may have taken just under 5 years to get the first 100 out of the way, but hopefully I will complete the next 150 at a slightly less glacial rate.

Ok David- I'll go first... what made me proud in 2017 was finishing a 9k swim (the fabulous Big Welsh swim http://loveswimrun.co.uk/thebigwelshswim/ - beautiful lake!), especially because I hadn't been able to train much at all and was very close to pulling out or going for a shorter distance (and I only learned to front crawl a few years ago). Km 3 to 9 was a real struggle, particularly after km 8 from when on a well meaning, but clingy rescue kayaker kept asking me if I wanted to be rescued. But I did make it, after 4 hours and 32 mins, and wasn't even last! (and my family was there to greet me who had had time to walk up and down Snowdon in the meantime...)
