It's that time of year when people are planning what races to do, so as an alternative option for 2018, why not try an aquabike?

This might be good for you if:

  • you are looking to get do some longer distance events but haven't built up the run miles yet
  • want to blow off the racing cobwebs before a middle/iron distance race later on in the season
  • think the race ends when the bike ends, but don't mind having a swim before (this is me)

Claire and I have signed up to Grafman Aquabike (details below) and a few others have expressed interest, so now is the time to book it in! This was an ETU qualifier last year and has hosted various national championships previously, so I expect it to be an excellent venue and from what I heard last year, it was a great race.

I should clarify this is a middle distance triathlon with an aquabike option. What this means is once you have finished the bike leg, you run directly to the finish from transition. As this is a triathlon, naturally anyone looking to do the actual triathlon is more than welcome to join too . You should even have some support during the run :D

The train to Huntingdon (the nearest station) is an hour away and there is a 6 mile cycle to the reservoir at the other end. There is an option to camp on-site or there are B&Bs down the road. For those driving, plenty of parking on site too. It's a fast and flat race that starts at 8am, so you practically get a lie in!

Sound good? Come join in!

I can’t do that weekend but I can only reiterate Rob’s comments.

I did a L/D Aquabike at Hever Bastion last year and it was a perfect prep for my first IM a month later

I did half the optional run (1 lap!)

Just bumping this up again.

A load of people have qualified for this year's Aquabike ETU race in Ibiza in October following their speedy times from different races last year and this year. Still plenty of time to find a race and/or submit your best times to see if you can also qualify.

Details for Ibiza and how to qualify here: https://www.britishtriathlon.org/gb-teams/age-group/2018-ibiza-etu-...

It's the same weekend as the ETU Aquathlon and Middle Distance championships, which a few Windrushers have already qualified for, so you will have company!

Rob you have inspired me.

I pre-entered Ibiza and have uploaded details of my (only ever) AG P1 in the Hever L/D Aquabike from last summer to apply for the team - for me, placing strongly is all about finding a sufficiently niche event..

Has anyone signed up to this? I could be tempted if there’s a Windrush contingent.

Woohoo!! Great to hear Lloyd!

And claire and I have signed up to grafman. Anyone else??

Think I'll sign up for this. I will drive up and will have space for 3 people! Have roof bars and can fit a bike carrier on the back (vw polo) if anyone has these!

I'm tempted to cycle up with an earlyish start to support if the weather's good (i.e. see you near the end because I probably won't make it to the start before 8am...) - let me know if anyone wants to join! Looks about 80 miles or so and flat.

Yeah defo  !! Dont think Ill have much of a chance to train up on Swimming and Cycling with my run run run focus at the moment.

We're going to Ibiza...back to the island :)

Wow! Great effort to go all that way to support guys!

And Stefan, depending on roof racks, I’m happy to get the train if you’re able to drive some of my stuff to the site. Would you be staying the night before or driving up on the morning?

Hi Rob, no problem! Happy to cart some bits up. As of yet undecided, happy to camp if there's a group!
