Hey, hey Windrushers!

I'm after some kit advice and hoping you lovely folks can help me out :)

My first trialthlon will be a sprit distance with indoor swim (although I would like to venture into some outdoor swimming). I can't justify spending entire paychecks on kit so any recommendations on must have kit items for Tri newbies, best brands, worst brands etc would be super helpful.

Thanks and happy Easter weekend!

Hey Cat,

A sprint tri with an indoor pool swim is a great way to get into triathlon. I started out with the same kind of race and used whatever goggles, bike and trainers I had at the time and a standard technical t shirt for the bike and run. I did purchase a pair of basic Zoot tri shorts and found it made a huge amount of difference on the bike (compared to cycling in swim stuff). I'd recommend the Zoot tri shorts, as mine have done a load of work and 7 years later I still use them for most things apart from long bike rides. dhb also have a good selection of kit at decent prices, which would be worth a look.

Of course the ladies in the club may have more specific advice on brands that work better for ladies!

Hi Cat. My first tri was also a pool based sprint. I swam in a swimming costume with a sports bra underneath and then put on fitted running shorts and t-shirt in transition (just don't pin your t-shirt together when putting your race number on and then have to un-pin and reattach during the race like I did!). However, if you can get a pair of tri shorts, I'd recommend doing that. Then you can swim in tri shorts and sports bra and only have to put a t-shirt on in transition. That'll be more comfortable and save you time in transition (putting dry clothes on a wet body isn't the easiest thing to do!). I've not tried dhb tri shorts, but have tried a lot of their other kit and it's always been good quality and value for money. Good luck for the race!

Thanks guys! This is super helpful :)

Second what Claire said, decathlon and Lidl / Aldi also good for cheapie, good value sports stuff, altho dont know if they do triathlon gear (yet...)

I'd third dhb kit from Wiggle. Really good value and quality. Most of my stuff is theirs and it lasts and lasts. I also used the Orca core range when I started and before I got Windrush kit.

This website also has constant sales on tri kit and I've found to be very useful https://www.sportpursuit.com/ , you just need to sign up.

A race belt is also a good thing - costs about £5 and you can put your number on it for the race and then clip it on for the bike and run. Don't get one with strange poppers for attaching the numbers though, I've seen a lot of people struggle with them. This could be a good one http://www.wiggle.co.uk/zone3-race-belt-1/ you can also get ones that hold some gels etc.
