Full Gas Winter Series - Circuit Races at Lee Valley Velopark

Hi All,

If you're interested in racing bicycles over winter then look no further...

Every Saturday from 6th October until March there are crit races at Lee Valley Velopark on their 1 mile closed circuit.

Races are categorised by ability with Cat 4 being the lowest category and Elite / Cat 1 the highest. Riders are automatically Cat 4 when they apply for a race licence and move up in category by earning points from finishing in the top 10 of races.

Women races are every other week from 1pm (starting on the 6th) whilst Men are every week at 2pm and alternate between Cat 3/4 races and purely Cat 4.

In order to enter, riders need to have at least a Silver Full Race Licence - this costs around £65 and can be purchased from the British Cycling website. From there an optional £16 Full Gas Membership gets you advance race entry for £15 (£5 discount) - non members can sign up on the day for £20.

To put into context and allay possible fears, anyone who has been to the Velodrome on Tuesday nights will know of several very fast riders  ('the fast group') - I have on good authority that these guys are a mix of Cat 2 and National level Youngsters...by no means are they the benchmark for getting started!

That being said, races typically last 45 minutes and are very competitive...all us newbies are under no illusions as to how hard it will be to not get dropped in your first races, let alone finish! However it will be a laugh and an excuse for some post race food and beverages.

It would be epic if we could get a team of both male and female racers each / every other week over winter - the club sessions at Herne Hill Velodrome are thoroughly recommended if you want to get started!

IN!

I'm down for this also

I could be up for this too, though will have to consider cost if I need to get a british cycling licence, a velopark membership and pay by the race too. I've never done any bike racing but found this year it was easily my strong triathlon leg so I'd be keen to give it a go.

I'm assuming even though they're called crits they'll be for geared bikes?

Sorry for the delay Charlie...

Yes they're for road bikes - if you have any reservations about cost etc. it would be best to get along to the Tuesday Velodrome Sessions and we can have a chat then? Alternatively join the group via the link below and we can try and answer any questions you may have.

hi, I cant get the whatsapp link to work, am I being stupid? or is that the first test of competency?

I think I'm up for this, are any women going down/ men going in time for the women's race? the track is open for pay and ride 12-1 (£5) so would probably go down for that first to remind myself how much I hate that course! good chance for men to warm up too....

Also IN.
