I'm a nervous & slow descender on my bike, and I think it's time I did something about it.

Perhaps 1:1 training / coaching sessions, either close to home or somewhere further away with more hills and less traffic.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice?

This is not a super-urgent problem - I'm willing to wait until the weather improves a bit.

You are not the first one to face this and obviously not going to be the last.

I guess cold wet greasy slippy roads are probably not the ideal place to build confidence and that is why so many cyclists head off to sunnier climes for a week or too in the late autumn or early spring. Most popular because of weather, the quality of roads and lack of severe traffic issues are Majorca and the Canary Islands.

The week Charles is organising will give opportunities to practice descending skills in relatively safe conditions with others who can help build confidence. The club has also organised weeks in Majorca in the past with Nick Dunn who is now involved with Challenge Tricamps. The weeks we attended had very good coaches who supported relatively novice descenders well.

The other option (and this involves more £ to join) is to join a cycling club like Dulwich Paragon - you will find there are plenty of friendly members who would be only too happy to help you develop your own skills.

Dedicated one-to-one coaching for cycle descending I haven't come across but am sure somebody is offering it - might be an expensive option though?

Hey Ed

Such an important skill that many of us could work on and I am sure there are many other members looking for the same thing so let me see if I can organise a one-off training session in the new year or ping me an email and I would be happy to recommend some one to one coaches who will be able to help you (coaching@windrushtri.co.uk).

Cheers!

I need this too because walking down hills is really slow ...

Thanks Tony & Becky!

I will definitely sign up for a one-off coaching session if you organise one.

Richmond Park is a great place to practice with a range of long straight downhill stretches and more technical sections going down. Can be relatively quiet if you get lucky/early morning.

Like most things I’d say it’s about gradually pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone. I would definitely go for some 121 coaching if budget allows and go from there. All the best!

Hiya, I've (finally!) qualified as a level 3 BTF coach which means I am qualified to take 1:1 bike coaching sessions, give me a shout if you're interested in some sessions. Generally even 1 session can make a real difference -Feelfitwithlucy@gmail.com

Sounds like an excellent offer from Lucy

One thing though, if you are going to use Richmond Park Edward the speed limit is 20 mph and it is not difficult to top that speed - either going down the long straight descent (Sawyers Hill) or the steeper more twisty descent (Broomfield Hill).

The Busies have been known to go out with speed guns and you could get then cautioned and/or fined if you are speeding.

I think next time I give my name as Paul Connor they will probably be wise to me ;-)

Heya Ed, not sure if you have noticed this session happening on the weekend which might help?
