Happy New Year Windrushers.

2019’s Cold Water Swimming Challenge is upon us and starts tomorrow (5th Jan). Below I’ve set out what we’ll be competing for this year.

First off, if you’re new to the club since last winter and interested in swimming in cold water, or a long-time member that hasn’t quite plucked up the courage to get down the lido on a Saturday morning, then 2019 is your year.

It’s a great way to start a Saturday (believe me) and I promise you’ll have a smile on your face all day (that isn’t frozen on). Just ask anyone. I’ve lost count of the number of people who say they’ll just ‘try it out’ and then you can’t keep them out, and they come back week after week.

The Saturday Lido swim takes place from 9:45am till 10:45 at Brockwell Lido and is free to Windrush members all year round at that time (swimming in our personal lane). We also have cake afterwards in the Prince Regent pub – and who doesn’t like cake?

Please sign up on the events page so who ever is baking knows how many to bake for.

If you love baking you can also volunteer to bake on a week. If you don’t bake I might have to so please volunteer to bake. The spreadsheet for signing up is here - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10aqMuYT3mTq6QDYD-APTBPj30-6...

Now onto the Challenge.

The Challenge - Badge of Honour

After last year’s success of the Gold Windrush Swimming Hats, we’re going old school and back to the age where you did 50m and got a swimming badge; that someone then sowed onto your costume, and you wore with pride – but ours are not sponsored by Kellogg’s or Kia-ora, and you don’t need to wear your pyjamas.

There are 3 badges to collect and it will depend on how warm (cold) the water is, as to which badge is up for grabs each week (this will be based on the ‘Official’ Brockwell Lido temperature which is tweeted out on a Saturday morning).

We have 10-degree, 8-degree and 5-degree badges. So if the water is below 10 and above 8 you get the 10-degree badge, etc etc.

The idea is to collect them all, and sow on to some Windrush kit - your bag, or possibly a towel!

There is a rule though. You have to swim at least one length (50m) of Brockwell Lido to be eligible to get a badge.

There are a limited number of badges so it will be on a first come first serve basis.

Last year during the Beast from the East storm the water got to 2.3 degrees and we’re expecting it to go below 5 degrees in the coming month or so.

If you do swim and I’m not at the lido that Saturday then you’ll need to let me know so I can assign a badge to you.

The cost will be £4 per badge – that covers all costs, for the club and a tiny bit extra to put towards paying for our club’s activities. Sadly it doesn’t go to my beer fund.

What more of an incentive do you need to get swimming in the cold again. Its great fun and quite good for the muscles after a Park Run.

Any questions please ask on here, on the Whatsapp Swimming Group, or chat to myself or Alicja (Swim Captains).

Happy Swimming and please be careful swimming in cold water.
