Fellow windrushers!

I've been incredibly lucky to obtain a place in one of the most difficult endurance bike races - the Transcontinental Bike Race. It starts in Belgium and finishes in Turkey covering 2600 miles. It's completely unsupported and I'll be riding solo with 4 check points between the start and finish.

If you have an interest in this you're all welcome to follow my progress on a Facebook page as I train, till the start on the 29/07, during the race and the finish 14 days later (or there about).

Here's a link to race site - http://www.transcontinental.cc/

What this does mean is most weekends will be spent out on the bike. I'll post up my intend ride plans during the week and if anyone fancies joining me they will be more than welcome.

Thanks,

Rory

I'm planning to go out on Sunday if you're pplanning a ride then?
Great, not sure on route yet but about 120-130km ish from brixton lido? Cake stop about half way, leaving the lido at 9am?

Ah Rory - it all makes sense now! Bonkers but brilliant! Looking forward to following your journey.

Peter

You transcontinental nutters will be needing to get some serious miles in before doing your Orient Express thing to Istanbul.

I am doing the Tour of Wessex (May 28-30) and Dragon Tour (June 3-5) to get training miles in as my Stoneman event is on July 9. These tours are challenging, hilly three day events and it would be great to have some Windrush company if they fit in with your training plans. Tour of Wessex is based in Somerton and I usually camp at the HQ for three nights. I haven't done the Dragon Tour before but it is a similar thing, riding out from HQ at Margam Park near Port Talbot on each day and culminating in the Dragon Ride. Camping is an option there too I think, or finding a local B and B.

Hey Charles,

The Tour of Wessex is definitely something on my 'to do' list. I'll let you know if I book in and we can keep each other company.
I think you should also have a look at the list of Audax events here

I'm not sure the Dragonride was that comparable for example to cycling through Italy - the Wales event is a tough long ride but you will tend to do it at a pace well above what you will be able to sustain for 16 days in a row (because otherwise you will miss the cutoffs).

Having said that the climbs are pretty tough - not as tough as the Alps and Dolomites but as tough as you are going to get in the UK - so good training from that angle. The audax events though are more specific to just churming out a long steady effort that can be sustained in the long run so would be a good thing to practise - also you could do them with all your equipment for the race to get the hang of what works and what doesn't

Tour of Wessex last year: at least some sun on all three days. Better camping facilities at Somerton than previous years. A tee-pee to hang out in after you finished the biking. No hostilities from locals that I could discern.

Sleeping in a ditch - luxury! these guys are going to be sleeping under rocks on the top of mountains :-)
