Racing and training is great (on a good day), but it's always more fun with others!

So rather than just having the official club champs races next year (Sprint - Crystal Palace, Olympic: Sussex), we wanted to get a few more races into the calendar.
Whilst we'll only have prizes for the official club champs races (sprint, olympic and half iron) if we get a good group of us going to the other races then it's more fun, we can share any travel costs and it hopefully helps encourage new members (and oldies) to race.
So this year we're opening it up to nominations which we'll then vote on at the AGM on 14 Nov.
Suggested categories are:
- Mid summer sprint (for people who join the club after CP tri, ideally one that wont be sold out and with an Olympic option)
- I/2 Iron/middle distance (this will be the club champs)
- Iron distance
- Ultra tri (e.g. celtman, triathlon x etc)
- Half marathon
- Marathon
- Summer sportive
- Adventure race
- Open water
- Feel free to propose another category
Please post the name of the race(s) you want to propose, and what category it falls in. Ideally also include a link to the website, and a few bullets on why you think it's great. Then come along to the AGM (Monday 14 November at 7.30pm at Pizza Express) to vote.
- There's nothing to stop people suggesting other races through the year, it's just about getting some momentum around a few key races in the calendar, in the same way that we've done with Fleet Half, Ride of falling leaves, etc.
- These aren't official club races but once they're chosen, if someone wants to help out e.g. approaching the organisers for club discounts, or organising transport in the same way that Caroline did for Fleet, that would be amazing.

This is a great idea Lucy thought about this yesterday when I checked out the Coastal Trail runs. Since I'm new to Tri and don't know the races I wouldn't know which to suggest, but I'd be happy for suggestions and more social races similar to the club champs which were awesome :)

Nobody got any suggestions? I'll kick off with some nominations:

- Mid summer sprint - one of the London League, don't think next year have been announced yet but would be good to increase club participation, and some of them dont tend to sell out too quickly.
- I/2 Iron/middle distance  - http://www.113events.com/cotswold-classic/ - Ashton Keynes water park, Sunday 13th August 2017 (there's also a June one) - flat course, quite close by with camping and dates not too close to club champs. (I also love Vitruvian, but date is very close to club champs and Worlds)
Half marathonhttp://hamptoncourthalf.com/, sunday 19th Feb - would make a change to Fleet and should be quite easy to get to, altho its a bit early as a warm up for London etc.
- Summer sportive - not quite Summer (end of April) but this is definitely on my list - http://letour.yorkshire.com/maserati-tour-de-yorkshire-ride (40/85/115k options, route still tbc but includes opportunities for watching pro race in some spectacular countryside. Details should be out in December - https://www.velouk.net/2016/10/25/tour-de-yorkshire-news/

For open water swim I would like to nominate the the Brighton Pier swim - the first week of July.

For the Middle Distance - obviously haven't done it but I hear Holkham Half has had really good feedback.

Anywhere warm!!

There are a few problems if it is too warm Paul - ask Nick

I like Vitruvian too but the problem is it sells out quickly so it would be difficult to get a group of us all to have a place. I did a really good 70.3 in the New Forest - it was tough especially the run but well organised and safe - took place in September. I think Charles B did it (and did very well) one year.

The Dartford Bridge tri events are pretty local, run by a guy on a mission from God to make triathlon accessible and they do both sprint and Olympic distances (and even an ironman distance race called Midnightman through the night which sounds crazy.

There are some sprint tris at Leybourne lake organised by a local club which don't sell out, pretty scenic and safe, the bike course is not too easy but fun.

If you want a longer trip up to the north east the Castle Challenge in Northumberland is brilliant - swim in the sea at Bamburgh castle, ride down coast to Alnwick castle, then 10k off road and round the grounds - sea was a bit errr challenging the first year I did it.

Another race worth considering is Portsmouth tri - swim in sea but bike and run course straightforward. It was sponsored by Wiggle, good value, easy to get to, and didn't sell out too fast. You could do sprint or oly and it was also end of season - Sept?

Most of the extreme tris are difficult to get into unless it is the first time they are on. Would definitely recommend Celtman though if you can get a place.

Tri Bristol put on a good event and there seem to be a few people who hail from around the SW - me included. The race is on 11th June.

Its a v flat course and the ride is along the Port Way which they close to traffic - some early season PBs for the taking.

Going to put this out there because I did it this year and definitely doing it again next year...It has to be done in pairs.

Adventure/Quadrathlon - Artemis Quadrathlon, Loch Tay, Scotland in July. An incredible race swimming across (a bloody freezing) loch, hiking/trail running up and down 7 munros, kayaking 8 miles and 30 mile bike around the loch.

It isn't cheap but it's an awesome weekend with big dinner, ceilidh and fireworks after, camping, and breakfast and massages the next day.

There's a fundraising element to it too.

Tooting Aquathlon Series - local, cheap and after work, they run every fortnight (may to july) - could choose one and also a good one to socialise after also!

For sprint distance racing - http://www.oceanlaketri.co.uk/our-races.html Tony previously mentioned this. Reasonably priced, 5 races over the year, usually starting quite early in march, I think. Issue is the bike route is quite dangerous with pot holes and huge lorrys going past at 70mph  (hope im not over selling it).

Many of us did the Sussex triathlon this year in Ashburnham which is organised by TL Sports Events. They have a number of races including Marathons, Triathlons, Open water swims around Surrey/Sussex. http://www.tlsportsevents.co.uk/tlevents.html

http://nicetrievents.com/  It's a bit far to go, but these are events around Cambridgeshire/Bedfordshire. Races include Open water, Duathlons, Triathlons, Marathons

Hope these are helpful.

Also forgot to mention the Henley swims, open water and marathon swims. More info here - https://www.facebook.com/HenleySwim/

Somewhat unrelated, if anyone's interested - https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/find-events

Keep an eye on this forum for Time Trialing events, 10 - 100 mile (or even 24hr) races will be put up next year. You don't need a time trial bike to race, plenty of people start off using their road bikes.

Has anyone done any TT races...and could recommend?
