Windrush have been contacted Brockwell swimmers who run the summer water polo sessions at the lido during the summer. They're going to be moving indoors for the winter season and have extended an invitation to Windrush members to join them.

The sessions will take place on Sundays 4:30–5:30 (just before the Windrush Juniors training sessions coached by Lois) at St Joseph's College (SE19 3HL).  Sessions are normally £14 but if Windrush members are keen, they can offer a £5 intro session (all players must be over 18, though).
They regularly have beginners and so everyone is very welcome. If nothing else, treading water and sprinting for an hour should make for good endurance training toward triathlon goals :)
There's a bit more information here too: http://www.brockwellswimmers.com/winter-water-polo-2017/
or contact polo@brockwellswimmers.com if you're interested in joining or finding out a bit more.

Hi everyone

These sessions on Sunday are a great introduction to waterpolo so if you'd like to give it a go or are curious and want to find out more then come down and join in. The sessions are mixed so boys and girls (all over 18) are all welcome.

We start with a bit of a swim warm up (widths not lengths - this is waterpolo!) then some techical drills such as treading water, passing, shooting, marking a player etc then we move into some team drills attacking and defending, that sort of thing and we finish with a bit of a match which is the fun bit, played across the width of the pool.

Waterpolo gives you a great level of fitness that blends strength and power with endurance. The sport requires short sprint swims repeated at high intensity and you don't stop moving so even when you are not swimming you are still treading water. It's a team sport and involves a ball so it's certainly different from pure swim training.

There are some technical cross overs that are useful for triathlon such as swimming head up front crawl which helps with sighting in open water and using the eggbeater technique for treading water which is useful if you ever have to stop in open water for any reason as you can support your body weight using just your legs so your hands are free to do up a zip or put your goggles / swim hat back on. It also helps with changing direction in the water quickly and you can develop a powerful swim stroke but technigue is a bit different from an endurance stroke that you would use in triathlon so be mindful of that.

If your not sure about how it works you could come and watch on Sunday or check out the video in this link.

I am happy to answer any questions anyone has so stick them on here and I'll get back to you.

Cheers
