Hi All,The committee is working on some open water training ideas (unfortunately we're dependent on water temperature) but we should be able to say more about these soon.
In the meantime, here are some ideas for (relatively) accessible open water places and swims / aquathlons. If you're doing your first tri in open water it might be an idea to consider these as part of the prep. Murky water + weeds + mass start can be a bit overwhelming (I had a total freakout during a swim last year and ended up doing most of it doggy paddle - not a nice experience).
If anyone's got any additional ideas, please add to the discussion. Also, if anyone's planning on driving out to the swimming lakes and has space for a passenger, please consider posting it - you'll have non car owners eternal gratitude ... and you can always split the petrol.
Places to swim
Datchet - open from the 29th April - currently an irresistible 13.2 degrees http://www.openwaterswim.co.uk/
Shepperton - will open when the water hits 12 degrees (today it's 8.5) - totally boat free so longer opening times http://www.sheppertonopenwaterswim.co.uk/wp/?page_id=49
Serpentine - open at weekends in May - every day from 1st June - http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/hyde-park/sport-in-hyde-park/ser...
Swims:
Throughout the summer, various locations, £30 odd

thanks Helen, very useful.....swam in Sheperton last year and the opening hours are much more useful - good 450 & 750mtrs loop if I remember correctly
I am very keen, but being car'less would be keen to hear if anyone has trips planned that i could jump on and share fuel costs etc.
Len i would have been in for this weekend but sadly am away, let me know if you plan to go again!
I've been to Heron Lake before: http://www.openwaterswimminguk.co.uk/default.aspx
It has a good 1km loop and quite a few canoes checking for safety, if you're worried about that kind of thing. I have a car and am happy to take passengers but would be leaving by 6.30am at the latest on a Saturday or Sunday morning...
I'd be up for an early morning swim to get some open water practice. I don't have a car so a lift would be great if anyone else is driving. Having said that, as I've never been before I'd be keen to first do the beginners session the club is organising, or book a coached session somewhere before I go it alone.
