Some interesting ideas in this video.

There is an increasing amount of evidence that intensive sessions - such as the Tuesday Velodrome sets and Wednesday spin - are at least as important as long base rides throughout the winter.

There is even a school of thought that low intensity base mileage is even a waste of time.

Like many issues related to coaching endurance sports though there is not as deep a body of evidence as you might ideally want. To do well in long distance triathlons you have to train your endurance - what is not so clear now is whether this needs to be done in the winter.
