Racing and training is great (on a good day), but it's always more fun with others!

So rather than just having the official club champs races next year (Sprint - Crystal Palace, Olympic: Sussex), we wanted to get a few more races into the calendar.
Whilst we'll only have prizes for the official club champs races (sprint, olympic and half iron) if we get a good group of us going to the other races then it's more fun, we can share any travel costs and it hopefully helps encourage new members (and oldies) to race.
So this year we're opening it up to nominations which we'll then vote on at the AGM on 14 Nov.
Suggested categories are:
- Mid summer sprint (for people who join the club after CP tri, ideally one that wont be sold out and with an Olympic option)
- I/2 Iron/middle distance (this will be the club champs)
- Iron distance
- Ultra tri (e.g. celtman, triathlon x etc)
- Half marathon
- Marathon
- Summer sportive
- Adventure race
- Open water
- Feel free to propose another category
Please post the name of the race(s) you want to propose, and what category it falls in. Ideally also include a link to the website, and a few bullets on why you think it's great. Then come along to the AGM (Monday 14 November at 7.30pm at Pizza Express) to vote.
- There's nothing to stop people suggesting other races through the year, it's just about getting some momentum around a few key races in the calendar, in the same way that we've done with Fleet Half, Ride of falling leaves, etc.
- These aren't official club races but once they're chosen, if someone wants to help out e.g. approaching the organisers for club discounts, or organising transport in the same way that Caroline did for Fleet, that would be amazing.

I just posted something about that.

Has anyone done any TT races...and could recommend?

Charles Barclay knows about TT races. We did one a couple of years ago. I managed to get lost on a course that was a straight line and back. :P

Oooh, yup, I'm definitely up for some TTs. Want to get a few races booked in first tho before deciding when...

Think from what Charles said before, main thing is finding one which isn't too hard to get to (and if Julian comes back for it then we'll check its not too easy to get lost!). Julian, have you found us a race out your way to do yet?

Speaking of Julian - what is the race for the Julian Garcia Cup?

how weird tom - posted at the same time as you!! great thinking ;)

Somewhat unrelated, if anyone's interested - https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/find-events

Keep an eye on this forum for Time Trialing events, 10 - 100 mile (or even 24hr) races will be put up next year. You don't need a time trial bike to race, plenty of people start off using their road bikes.

Its the Parkrun mob match (against CPT and Greenwich Titons) held in Spring time...its a very converted trophy that has many stories to tell...plus its done on age grading so always a chance to win!

Talking of Julian, we need a new run captain! Come to the Meet the Comittee drinks tonight to find out more....

A group of us did the 25 mile TT on the Bentley course between Guildford and Alton last year; good course for a pb or going under the hour.

Having said that, in July last year a time-trialler was killed on this course by a van driver who was texting while driving. The van driver got convicted and is spending eight years in jail, but it does highlight the dangers of time-trialling on trunk roads. I used to regard the Bentley course as relatively safe because the road is open, visibility good and traffic not too heavy, but now I am a bit reluctant to recommend time trialling at all as a form of training for triathlon. I just don't think it is safe enough.

My recommendations are as follows:

For mid-summer sprint/standard tri, Swanage Triathlon in Dorset is good fun in a beautiful setting. There are plenty of camp sites nearby and post-race cream tea in Corfe Castle is a must. It is worth the schlep from London.

For half-ironman club championship race, any one of Holkham Hall in Norfolk, New Forest or Ashburnham as noted above. All have challenging off road run sections and nice settings.

For ironman there is already a group that planned to go to Nice in June. That race has been postponed following the city council decision that no events will take place on the Promenade des Anglais for one year after this summer's atrocity, out of respect for the victims. We are waiting to see when/whether the race will be re-arranged for later in 2017.

For Ultra distance, I am doing an iron-distance 'extreme' triathlon in the Lofoten Islands in the north of Norway August 19 (google Arctic triple). Massimo and I did the Stonebrixiaman triathlon in the Italian Alps this summer and loved it (I think Massimo is doing it again this year).

For early summer sportive, I recommend the Dragon Ride in south Wales, or three day Dragon Tour. If you want an early season challenge, the Liege-Bastoigne-Liege sportif in Belgium is a good one on a classic race route.

For half marathon, the Hackney Half is really well-organised, well-supported and relatively easy to get to.

Thanks Charles for recommending an extreme Ironman...in the Arctic circle

You should meet my brother ... he suggested taking part in the Race Across America last year (yes it is all the way across the USA)... on time trial bikes in a relay team. He was looking for about £5k to pay for everything that was involved...and suggested a test to prove the right level of fitness would be a sub hour 25 mile time trial (which they would check with official CTT results)

Luckily an accident intervened

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far, keep them coming!

last chance to get your nominations in before tonight. closing midday today.
